West Valley Occupational Center has been operated over 45 years by the Los Angeles Unified School District, Division of Adult and Career Education. We offer short-term career and technical training, providing individuals with entry-level skills as well as upgrading skills to meet an ever changing job market.

Certificates[up]
All courses are competency based. Students will be awarded completion certificates after successfully completing all competencies. Certificate course-work is recognized by industry and surrounding local community college.


Age Requirement for Enrollment[up]
Any person 16 years of age or older is eligible for enrollment. Those under 18 must be registered through our Young Adult Office. Call (818) 346-3540 ext 275.


Enrollment & Registration[up]
Enrollment

Must be confirmed by attendance at the first class meeting. Under the continuous enrollment policy, vacancies at the first class meeting may be filled immediately from the waiting list.

Continuous Enrollment & Registration[up]
Students may enroll in most classes any time during the class term if space is available.
Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. Waiting list cards are valid for the current class term only.
Prerequisites: Some classes have requirements that must be met before taking the course. Please see each class description to check if there are any prerequisites for the class you wish to take.

Registration Office (Room 102) hours: Monday - Thursday:  8:00 am - 8:30 pm

10/9-Week Classes Begin:
February 6, 2012 & April 23, 2012 (see also the School Calendar).
You must be present at the time of registration and pay fees by cash or check only. The Registration Office is located in the Administration Building, Room 102.
*Please note that Registration Office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:00 pm when classes are not in session. Offices will be closed March 30, 2012. In addition, offices may be closed without notice due to LAUSD furlough days.

Re-Enrollment:[up]
Students may not re-enroll in a class that they have passed.

Fees and Exemptions Information[up]

For registration only cash or check is accepted!

See fees below each class listing.
1. A registration fee of $20 will be charged for classes up to 10 weeks, and $30 for classes 11-20 weeks, whichever is greater.*
2. Class fees will be charged varying from $5 - $125 for each class selected. (Fees may change without advanced notice.)
3. A photo ID fee of $4. (Voluntary)
4. Student Body Fee of $1. (Voluntary)
5. Students may be requested to purchase books and/or supplies.
6. Students receive a discount when taking more than one class per term.
7. A fee of $1 will be charged to copy a lost registration form.
*A discount may be available when taking more then one class in a term.

Registration is not complete until all fees are paid.
The registration office accepts cash or checks only.
(No credit cards. A service fee of $5 will be charged per returned check.)


Exemptions[up]
Individuals exempt from paying registration fee (#1 above) only:

1. Persons 60 years of age or older.
2. Students receiving verified public assistance. (i.e. AFDC, General Relief, Food Stamps, Unemployment, SSI, CalWORKS, GAIN).

Individuals exempt from paying all fees
1. Concurrently enrolled high school students (see here the High School Student Services).
2. Persons with disabilities who enroll and qualify for support services. (See here the Disability Services.)

Individuals eligible for an exemption must inform the Registration Office staff before registering.


Request for Refunds[up]
1. Requests must be made within seven calendar days after the first possible day of attendance.
2. Must be accompanied by a paid receipt.
3. Refunds are subject to a $15 drop fee for each transaction.
4. Refunds are sent by U.S. mail after processing. It takes approximately four weeks.


Termination Policy[up]
Students may be dropped from a class at West Valley Occupational Center for the following reasons:
1) Failure to attend first class meeting at the time class is scheduled to begin.
2) Failure to meet prerequisites as stated in the class schedule and approved by Division of Adult and Career Education.
3) Absent more than three consecutive class sessions in a semester without contacting instructor.
4) Unsatisfactory progress in a course due to irregular attendance.
5) Committing an unlawful act on school premises, violation of school regulations or disruption of the orderly operation of the school or class.
6) Unsuccessful completion of the required hours and competencies for the course.
7) Continually arriving late to class or leaving early (See Student Orientation Handbook).
8) Inappropriate behavior or failure to adhere to code of conduct.


Closing of Classes[up]
Administration reserves the right at any time to reduce the number of course offerings, reduce the length of courses and/or reduce the number of class meetings due to lack of adequate funding or low attendance. Some classes may be full prior to open registration due to pre-registration of continuing students.


Length of Training[up]
The length of training varies. Your completion will depend on curriculum guidelines, your previous experience, attendance, and individual ability. Students must meet all course competencies. Students may not re-enroll for a class after completion of the term without the instructor and/or counselor (if applicable) approval. Enrollment for a third term must be approved by the instructor and/or counselor (if applicable) and an administrator.
