This course prepares students for employment in health-related fields. Students will develop their ability to understand the language of medicine through word building, analysis of terms, pronunciation, and spelling. This is a prerequisite for the other HIT courses.
Prerequisites: Employment level competency in written and oral communication in English.
Completion Requirements: Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency and complete at least 80% of the course hours.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECH/2: ELECTRONIC RECORDING AND FILING
This course prepares individuals for entry-level employment in a health care environment. Training includes safety procedures, medical ethics and HIPAA regulations, preparation of various medical forms, reports, and correspondence, record keeping and chart assembly practices, telephone techniques, appointment scheduling, and medical filing practices. MediSoft will be utilized.
Prerequisites: Employment level competency in written and oral communication in English. Health Information Tech/1: Terminology (see above), type 35 wpm, Computer Basics, Literacy or Foundations or equivalent Challenge Test (see test schedule here).

HEALTH INFORMATION TECH/3: INSURANCE AND BILLING
This course prepares individuals for entry-level employment in medical offices, hospitals, clinical laboratories, insurance companies, and other medical facilities. Students will learn computerized office management using MediSoft. Instruction will include insurance terminology, procedure and payment entry, and HIPAA guidelines. Students will also learn about Medicare, Medi-Cal, HMOs (see also here), PPOs (see also here), commercial carriers, reading EOBs, etc.

This course prepares individuals to transform verbal descriptions of diseases, injuries, conditions, and procedures into numerical designations (codes) for purposes of reimbursement and statistical medical record keeping to comply with Federal regulations.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECH/5: AMBULATORY CODING SYSTEMS [CPT/HCPCS]
This course prepares individuals to convert widely accepted uniform descriptions of medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures rendered by health care providers into five-digit numeric codes for the purpose of effectively and efficiently communicating to third-party payers the procedures and service provided to patients. Training includes coding compliance; identifying and applying coding guidelines to the selection of Evaluation Management, Anesthesia, Surgery, Pathology/Laboratory, Radiology, and Medicine five-digit codes and two-digit modifiers. Abstracting principles are also included.

NURSING ASSISTANT: LONG-TERM CARE AND HOME HEALTH AIDE
This course offers an overview of anatomy, physiology, nutrition, medical terminology and an introduction to diseases and disorders. Emphasis is given to safety principles, infection control and the philosophy of nursing. This course also integrates methods for meeting the social and psychological needs of the patient. Nursing skills and clinical procedures are practiced in the classroom skills laboratory before being demonstrated in a community health facility. Upon completion of the required theory and clinical practice, the student will be qualified as a Home Health Aide and will be a candidate for the Certified Nurse Assistant state examination.
Prerequisites: Employment level competency in written and oral communication in English. 8.0 reading level (see test schedule here), no criminal record, current ID, TB clearance, physical exam, BLS valid CPR Healthcare Provider Card, and Social Security Number. Applicants passing the entrance examination will be given registration information for the upcoming class.
Completion Requirements: Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency and complete at least 100% of the course hours.
Cost: Approximate total cost for the program is $650 (registration, books, uniform and supplies).

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
(Approved for Veterans)
This course is designed to prepare students for employment in a pharmaceutical setting. The class consists of theory and clinical preparation to include: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmaceutical settings, duties and responsibilities of a Pharmacy Technician, pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations and symbols, metric and apothecary systems, drug requirements, record-keeping, dispensing prescriptions, knowledge of manufacturing, and packaging and labeling of drug products. Students will perform Pharmacy Technician activities in the classroom and at a community site while under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. At successful completion of this course, students will be qualified to register with the California State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certified Board Exam (PTCB) (see also here).
Prerequisites: Employment level competency in written and oral communication in English. High School Diploma or GED, no criminal record, Basic “C” CPR Certificate, TB clearance and physical exam, 10.0 reading level (see test schedule here) and basic math skills (to be evaluated in class). Typing speed of 25 wpm highly recommended. Applicants passing the entrance examination will be given registration information for the upcoming class.

PHYSICAL THERAPY AIDE - Class starts on February 28
This course prepares students to provide basic physical therapy treatment in health care facilities. Instruction includes: employability skills, workplace safety and infection control, ethical and legal standards, interpersonal skills, and medical terminology. It presents an overview of selected anatomy and physiology systems as well as the disorders and treatments for those bodily systems. Instruction and practice are provided in the assessment of vital signs, body mechanics, treatment methods, therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises and mobility training. Practice of skills in the classroom and laboratory/clinical observations are all included in the training.
Prerequisites: Employment level competency in written and oral communication in English. Good health, 8:0 reading level (see test schedule here). Applicants passing the entrance examination will be given registration information for the upcoming class.
