Accounting Clerk Program

Overview

The Accounting Clerk program consists of three classes and is designed to prepare individuals for careers in the field of accounting. The first two courses are designed to provide students with technical instruction and practical experience in double-entry accounting systems.

The Accounting Clerk Upgrade course is designed to introduce the principles and processes involved in computerized accounting systems (QuickBooks). The courses provide students with technical instruction and practical experience with accounting systems.

The competencies in all of these courses are aligned with the California High School Academic Content Standards and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.

Accounting 1

Brief Course Description: This is the first of two courses in accounting. Students will learn the basics of double-entry accounting with both technical instruction and hands-on practice. Topics include an introduction to accounting, workplace safety, resource management, business math, and using accounting tools. Students will also learn about employability skills, accounting rules, journals, ledgers, worksheets, and financial statements. The course covers adjusting and closing entries, spreadsheet accounting, accounts payable, uncollectible accounts, inventories, investments, short-term liabilities, and basic banking procedures.

    • Prior completion of STEP Orientation
    • Algebra and Excel experience required

Accounting 2

Brief Course Description: This is the second of two accounting courses. It offers technical instruction and hands-on practice in double-entry accounting. Students will review workplace safety, business math, employability skills, and learn about entrepreneurship. Key topics include types of business organizations, fixed assets, long-term liabilities, financial statement analysis, payroll, discounts, returns, job costing, plant assets and depreciation, notes and interest, accrued items, and end-of-year financial processes.

    • Prior completion of STEP Orientation
    • Certificate of Completion: Accounting 1
    • Algebra and Excel experience required

Accounting Clerk: Upgrade (Quickbooks)

Brief Course Description: This course introduces the principles and processes involved in computerized accounting systems, (QuickBooks). Topics include managing files, setting up a company, chart of accounts, payroll accounting, handling customers and sales, working with vendors and purchases, managing inventory, setting up sales tax, banking transactions, bank reconciliation, processing payroll, and making general journal entries. Students will also learn how to create reports, develop employability skills, and complete a final evaluation.

    • Prior completion of STEP Orientation
    • Certificate of Completion: Accounting 2
    • Algebra and Excel experience required
