Pharmacy Technician License Prep

Pharmacy Technician License Preparation (600 hours)

This comprehensive, competency-based course equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career as a pharmacy technician in diverse pharmaceutical settings. Through a combination of classroom instruction and clinical training, students will gain knowledge in:
  • Medical terminology and pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, and symbols
  • Anatomy and physiology relevant to pharmacy practice
  • Roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians
  • Metric and apothecary systems, pharmacy calculations, and record-keeping
  • Drug manufacturing processes and legal requirements for pharmaceuticals
  • Interpersonal communication skills specific to pharmacy settings
  • Hands-on practice in various pharmaceutical environments
  • 200 hours of clinical training under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist
  • Preparation for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Exam

Upon successfully completing the program, students will be eligible to apply for a California State Pharmacy Technician License.

The competencies in this course are aligned with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) pharmacy technician education and training standards, the California High School Academic Content Standards, and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards.

Note: Clinical externship sites or employers may require additional lab work, background checks, and/or drug screenings as part of the program.

  • Course Prerequisites:
    • STEP Orientation
    • High School Diploma or Equivalency
    • No criminal record
    • Evidence of Vaccination
      • Measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B series, rubeola, varicella
    • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) certification
    • TB clearance and physical exam
  • Reading Assessment Requirement: Yes | 238 or higher on CASAS GOALS (Reading)
  • Math Assessment Requirement: Yes | 226 or higher per CASAS GOALS (Math)
  • STEP Orientation: Yes
